Cannabis rules for Cape Cod and South Shore visitors
What out-of-state visitors can buy, where they can use it, and what trips people up in summer.

Visitors 21 and older can buy adult use cannabis in Massachusetts with any valid government photo ID, including an out-of-state license or passport. Use is legal only on private property with permission, not on beaches, in parks or in cars, and cannabis cannot be taken across state lines.
Can out-of-state visitors buy?
Yes. Adult use sales in Massachusetts are open to anyone 21 or older with a valid, unexpired government photo ID. An out-of-state driver's license or a passport works. Medical sales are limited to patients registered in Massachusetts, so an out-of-state medical card does not work at a Massachusetts medical dispensary.
How much can you carry?
Adults 21+ can possess up to one ounce of marijuana, or up to five grams of concentrate, outside the home. At home, the limit is ten ounces. For a vacation rental, the one ounce limit is the one to think about while you are out and about.
Where can you use it?
On private property, with the owner's permission. That is the whole list. Public consumption is not allowed, which rules out beaches, dunes, parks, bike paths, sidewalks, boardwalks, and public transportation. Many rentals, hotels and inns prohibit smoking of any kind, so check the rental agreement before you light up on the deck.
Edibles, beverages and tinctures avoid the smoke question entirely, but they are still subject to the same public consumption rule.
Cars and driving
Keep cannabis in its original sealed package, or in the trunk or a locked glove compartment, while driving. Massachusetts treats open cannabis in the passenger area like an open container of alcohol. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, and so is using cannabis in a vehicle, parked or moving, by the driver or passengers.
Federal land and state lines
Cannabis remains illegal under federal law, so it is prohibited on federal property. On the Cape, that includes Joint Base Cape Cod and federally managed land. Carrying cannabis across state lines is also illegal, including driving home to Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York or anywhere else, even if that state has legal cannabis too. Buy what you will use during your stay.
Boats and islands
Boating under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Massachusetts, just as with alcohol. If you are heading to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard, both islands have their own licensed dispensaries; check the rules of your ferry operator before bringing anything aboard.

Questions
Can I use my out-of-state ID at a Massachusetts dispensary?
Yes, for adult use. Any valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older works, including out-of-state driver's licenses and passports.
Can I smoke weed on Cape Cod beaches?
No. Massachusetts prohibits consuming cannabis in public places, and beaches are public places. Use is limited to private property with the owner's permission.
Can I bring cannabis home to another state?
No. Transporting cannabis across state lines is illegal under federal law, even between two states where it is legal. Plan to use what you buy while you are in Massachusetts.
