Your first dispensary visit: what to bring and what happens inside
Check-in, ID, payment, and how to talk to a budtender without knowing the vocabulary.

For a first dispensary visit in Massachusetts, bring a valid government photo ID showing you are 21 or older (plus your patient card if you are a medical patient) and cash, a debit card or the CanPay app. Expect an ID check at the door, a conversation with a budtender, and child-resistant packaging on the way out.
Before you leave the house
Check that your ID is valid and unexpired. Massachusetts dispensaries cannot accept expired IDs, and a school or work ID does not count. Out-of-state driver's licenses and passports are fine. Then decide how you will pay: cash, a debit card run as an ATM-style transaction, or the CanPay app. Credit cards are not accepted.
If you already know which store you are going to, look at its menu first. You do not have to order ahead, but browsing at home means you walk in with a few questions instead of none.
Check-in
At the entrance, a staff member checks your ID and, at Triple M, asks whether you are shopping medical or adult use. Medical patients show their state card too. Adult use first-timers do not need to register or create an account to buy, though you can join the rewards program if you like.
Talking to a budtender
This is the part people worry about, and it is the easiest. You do not need to know strain names or terms like terpene. Tell the budtender three things: how you want to consume (smoke, vape, eat, drink, or apply), what you want the experience to feel like (relaxed, social, sleepy, focused), and how much experience you have. They will narrow the menu to a handful of options and explain the differences.
Ask about onset time and how long effects last for anything you are considering. That single question prevents most bad first experiences, especially with edibles.
How much to buy
Less than you think. For a first purchase, one product in one format is plenty. Adults can possess up to one ounce of flower or five grams of concentrate outside the home, but that is a legal ceiling, not a suggestion. A single pre-roll, a small pack of low-dose gummies, or a tincture is a sensible start.
Paying and packaging
Prices on the menu include the product price; adult use purchases add state and local taxes at checkout. Your purchase goes into sealed, child-resistant packaging. Keep it sealed until you are home, and store it in the trunk while driving, since Massachusetts treats open cannabis in a car like an open container.
After your visit
Start low and go slow. Take a small amount, wait, and note how you feel. With inhaled products, wait at least 15 minutes before more. With edibles and beverages, wait at least two hours. Never drive after using cannabis. If you have questions afterward, call the store; budtenders would rather answer a question than have you guess.
Short version: valid ID, cash or debit, tell the budtender how you want to feel and how you want to take it, buy one thing, start small.

Do I need to make an account to buy at Triple M the first time?
No. Adult use customers only need a valid government photo ID showing they are 21 or older. Rewards sign-up is optional. Medical patients need their state card, which is already tied to their registration.
Can I bring a friend under 21 inside with me?
No. Everyone who enters a Massachusetts adult use dispensary must be 21 or older with valid ID. Medical dispensaries are limited to registered patients and caregivers.
How long does a first visit take?
Usually 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many questions you have and how busy the store is. Weekday mornings are the quietest time for a longer conversation with a budtender.
